Sun 20th - Tue 22nd April 2003

9:00 Am - 4:00 Pm

The Nuclear Physics Open Day will be held on the above dates and times at the college of Science building. In the nuclear physics and positron physics labs and the area in front of them.

The open day is designed to give an idea of what it is like to study physics at University. There will be equipment used in University laboratories and will have ample opportunities to speak to people actively involved in research work and University teaching. Participants can take this chance to explore the wonders and applications of nuclear and radiation physics.

Please visit us and you will find:

Information:

Browse a large variety of informative posters related to all aspects of nuclear, radiation and particle physics ranging from basic principles to latest trends in research. Watch videos, animations, and presentations about nuclear physics basics, and the world of particle physics. There is certainly something for everyone.

Competitions

Join in one or more of our competitions. Learn to think physics while having fun at the same time. There is exciting presents for winners.

1. Physics Photo Competition:

Look around you and choose one of the many fascinating physics phenomena, take a photo and enter the competition. There are prizes for the best ideas in photos. You need to explain what’s in your photo in a short paragraph. Register to enter the competition. Submit your photo at least one week before the open day.

2. Physics Toy Competition:

Many simple toys, or desk decoration items represent clearly important physical properties or phenomena. To show physics in action, bring your toy along to enter the competition, you also need to write a short paragraph to tell us about your toy. Register to enter the competition. Submit your toy at least one week before the open day.

3. Nuclear Physics Poster Competition:

Create your own poster about any topic related to nuclear physics. Register to enter the competition. Submit your poster at least one week before the open day. The best nuclear physics poster will be chosen for the first prize.

Careers for Physics graduates: Advice and representatives:

Physics students can visit the careers advice corner to make use of the informative posters and brochures available.

There will also be representatives from several governmental and private sector organizations where physicist are employed. Those will be advertised on a later date. We also invite any organizations or companies interested in joining us to contact us at the contacts below.

Experimental Displays

Displays of many simple nuclear physics experiments which the students perform in our laboratories will be available. Demonstrations will be performed by our nuclear physics students.

Research in Physics

Have a look at high quality research performed using state of the art equipment in the fields of nuclear and radiation physics, positron physics, and material science.

Join world class institutes

There will also be a chance to join the most prestigious professional bodies in physics; such as the Institute of Physics (IOP) (UK), and the American Physical Society (APS).  Applications and recommendations will be available.
